Abstract
Evgeny Zamyatin’s dystopian novel, We, written in 1920 and first published in 1924, is one of the earliest and most significant works of the genre. Through the first-person narration of the engineer D-503, the novel explores themes of power, freedom, and happiness within a futuristic totalitarian society. This article analyses the use of estrangement as a central element of the narrative, with particular attention to the application of mathematical and scientific concepts to daily life and human relationships. Specific aspects such as the identification of individuals with alphanumeric codes, the organisation of life according to rigid geometric patterns, and the reduction of happiness to a mathematical formula are examined. The article aims to demonstrate how Zamyatin’s We, through its original language and innovative narrative style, criticises the tendencies of modern society towards homogenisation and control, whilst offering a profound reflection on human nature and its capacity for resistance.
