Abstract
Nuclear fusion is regarded as one of the most promising energy sources for the years to come. However, achieving this goal is considered to be one of the most di􀆯icult tasks, due to the extreme physical and technological complexity involved. The European Roadmap toward commercial nuclear fusion energy is based on two main projects: ITER and DEMO. In addition to these primary projects, there are several smaller ancillary projects, each with a specific scientific objective. Among these projects, the work presented in this thesis focuses on Italy's next tokamak, the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT), which is currently under construction at ENEA in Frascati. The scientific objective of the DTT is to study di􀆯erent divertor solutions for heat extraction that will be relevant to DEMO power plant. This thesis work is devoted to the thermo-mechanical analysis and structural integrity verifications of some of the main structural components of the DTT machine. The design of these components, carried out according to a well-established Design By Analysis approach, is closely linked to compliance with the limits imposed by dedicated standards, the study and comparison of which was an integral part of this work. The study began with an analysis of the dynamic behavior of the machine toroidal complex. Then, the response of the system under the action of seismic actions was examined, with particular attention given to the displacements and stresses at the base of the cryostat. The investigation also involved the potential benefits of stress reduction through the incorporation of seismic isolation systems. Therefore, an analysis of the vacuum vessel was conducted in consideration of its various operational states. The design loads for this component were determined to be attributed to electromagnetic actions. Specifically, the case study on Vertical Displacement Events revealed potential critical concerns from the perspective of structural integrity. Utilizing the submodeling technique, a series of progressive strengthening interventions were assessed, culminating in compliance with the reference standards. Finally, the bolted flanged joint between the vacuum vessel and the gravity supports was examined. Given that the position and dimensions of the joint are constrained by spatial limitations, the objective was to identify an optimized configuration that was compatible with these boundary conditions.
