Abstract
Alluvial and coastal plains form and evolves under different natural forcings like climate, tectonic and sea level rise. Since the development of the agricultural practices progressively agricultural activity focused on alluvial plain and human activity was one of the main drivers competing with the natural evolution of the alluvial plain. In the Mediterranean basin many alluvial plains were characterized in different stages of the development of shallow lacustrine and/or important swampy area. In Italy most of the shallow lacustrine with have been reclaimed since the roman time. To reconstruct the story of these shallow lacustrine system is fundamental because many of these areas are important hot spot of biodiversity and their preservation and/or restoration can be strategic. In this work we present the Late Holocene evolution of Sesto Lake (central Italy) based on chronological, stratigraphic, geomorphological, geoacheological, biological (pollens) data. In the context of fluvial environment (Bini et al., 2025), the lake started to evolve in the LALIA (Late Antique Little Ice Age), a phase of climatic deterioration locally characterized by an increasing precipitation (Zanchetta et al., 2020). The high resolution of the data analyzed allows the reconstruction of Human- environment relation in the last thousand years until the final lake reclamation at the end of the 19thcentury.
