Abstract: 
This paper deals with the use of social networks and of applications belonging to the so-called web 2.0 as tools for scholarly research. The paper is divided in two main sections: 1) what is web 2.0, and 2) which activities and tools might be considered as the most relevant in this context from the point of view of academic research. In this second and last section, the attention is be devoted, as the title of the paper suggests, mainly to social networks and to social network applications, and to the idea of research-oriented social networks
