Title: | L’apicoltura rupestre nella Tuscia | Authors: | De Minicis, Maria Elisabetta | Issue Date: | 2018 | Abstract: | The attention given, since many years, to the study of cave settlements in the Tuscia region, with the identification of important phenomena regarding the peopling and organization of rural areas particularly in the early and full medieval period, brought to reflect on topics more specifically related to the social and economic management of this territory. Among these topics are apiaries, considered in the present paper; these consist especially in series of niches, traditionally identified as suitable for beefarming, quite common in the territory analyzed, but challenging to date. In order to arrive to an acceptable dating, not only atypological comparison but, most of all, the analysis of context was adopted. The quite significant distribution of these peculiar structures reveals a relevant economic source tied to the use of honey and wax; in some cases it is possible to consider a form of intensive farming of bees, which has for a long time characterized the territory of the Tuscia region. |
