Title: Normative Dictionaries
Authors: Lorenzetti, Luca
Issue Date: 2020
Abstract:
The paper explores the historical development and role of normative dictionaries in the standardization of the Italian language. It traces their origins to early lexicographic traditions, particularly the 1612 Vocabolario della Crusca, and examines their evolution in relation to Italian linguistic history. The study discusses the influence of prescriptive grammar norms and literary standards on dictionary compilation, highlighting key moments in Italian lexicography, from early literary-based selections to modern digital adaptations. The paper also addresses the tension between normative and descriptive approaches, the impact of scientific and technical vocabulary, and the role of dictionaries in shaping linguistic authority. Ultimately, it provides a comprehensive analysis of how Italian normative dictionaries have contributed to the codification and modernization of the language.
