Abstract:

For the survey of archaeological sites, research is now making ever-greater use of remote sensing techniques, capable of obtaining spatial data without the need for physical contact between the detector and the object. Among these, ground-based remote sensing techniques, also indicated as geophysics, are playing a prominent role in archaeology, because, by using different principles of physics, they allow the detection and mapping of physical anomalies in the subsoil, even in very large areas, in shorter time and with less economic expenditure than stratigraphic excavation. In light of these advantages, it is of primary importance for contemporary research, both to implement instrumentation, software and data processing procedures, and to try to get a more in-depth and detailed interpretation of the buried contexts thus detected.
This research starts from these issues and, by focusing on the interpretation of ancient buried contexts detected by geophysics, explores the potential of a specific technique of spatial analysis, Space Syntax, or configuration analysis, developed in the context of urban planning and architectural design and now used worldwide and in various disciplines, including archaeology.
Although the method has already been used for the analysis of geophysical surveys, this research has attempted a different approach, never applied in archaeology. The experiment was carried out on the site of Falerii Novi (Fabrica di Roma, Vt), a Roman city mainly preserved underground, excavated only in very limited areas, and almost entirely known thanks to a published magnetometric survey. Taking into account the city’s road system, the procedure adopted for the application, while it is not new in architectural planning and design, represents a new approach in archaeology. It consists of comparing different reconstructive scenarios of the spatial configuration, developed here on the basis of the deficiencies of the survey, previous and new reconstructive hypotheses, and the comparison with other known cases. Three different types of Space Syntax analysis (axial analysis, segment analysis, and visibility graph analysis) were conducted for each reconstructive layout (eight in total). The results have then been read individually and cross-referenced, allowing a detailed assessment of both urban dynamics and the impact of each change in the configuration.
Although the Space Syntax does not allow to integrate with certainty the gaps of the geophysical survey or to date the buried structures, the technique has proved a useful supporting instrument for the interpretation of the ancient context, highlighting the areas most significant for urban vitality and thus allowing to reason on the logic that might have guided in ancient certain urban choices, such as the location of buildings or the design of street network. It also shows its potential for planning future interventions on the site, such as the areas to be subjected to stratigraphic
excavation, thatexcavation, that can be chosen in a targeted way in order to obtain the information necessary to a whole understanding of the urban site under exam.
The thesis introduces in the first chapter the issues related to the investigation of archaeological deposits, defining the research questions and the reasons that led to the choice of Space Syntax as technique of analysis and the case study. The second chapter is then dedicated to the description of the theories and techniques of Space Syntax and some studies particularly significant for the present research, such as Roman and buried urban contexts analyzed using this type of method. The third and fourth chapters contain, respectively, the historical and archaeological background of the case study and the data produced, while the fifth and final chapter is reserved for the conclusions.
