Abstract:
azioni povere (Amalfi 1968), Campo Urbano (Como 1969) e Volterra 73 (Volterra 1973).
principalmente dalle amministrazioni pubbliche.

The research analyzes the relationship between contemporary art and Italian historical centers in the
‘60s and ‘70s, revising well-known experiences and reconstructing other less investigated ones.
They used sculpture, environment, action and ephemeral tools of architecture to relate with the
historical evidence and values of the city. The selected case studies are framed by a time when art
begins to go beyond the boundaries of the designated spaces to open up to a wider use and to an
increasingly social function, an historic phase where our nation shows the urgent need to safeguard
the historical centers, which have been severely damaged by the post-war demolitions and by the
economic boom modernization. The study examines exhibitions such as Sculture nella città
(Spoleto 1962), Arte povera più azioni povere (Amalfi 1968), Campo Urbano (Como 1969) and
Volterra 73 (Volterra 1973). For the ‘70s, sculpture exhibitions promoted in city centers, mainly by
public administrations, are also compared. Particular attention is given to the city of Rome, where
historical spaces connect with Christo’s ephemeral empaquetage as well as the temporary events of
the Estate romana. Lastly, the research analyzes three different experiences of southern Italy: those
of Zafferana Etnea and Gibellina, in Sicily, and of Matera, a Lucanian town. They have in common
the trust placed in the transformative capacities of art at the service of the city. An appendix with
documents and interviews completes the work.
