The research in Piacenza starts from the analysis of the past edited studies about the city in the early Middle Ages followed by the document summaries of the original 11th century papers from the main city archives. The work is divided in two parts: the first is about a deepening of the institutions who produced the records such as the Cathedral, the basilica of Sant’Antonino and the monastery of S. Savino and the other monasteries. The second is about the power of the bishop, the feudal system and the socio-political issues linked to the families that are about to settle in and develop abilities in a rapidly changing society. The results shows a complex situation all along the 11th century when important events take place, like the Church Reform and the forthcoming birth of the Commune, and leave consequences also in Piacenza. Even the modest amount of feudal documentation and the birth of a new social layer can be read as supremacy of the bishop who is able to tie up some families rooted in the lands through territorial powers such as a network of castles in our century not too tight. There are also families in contrast with the bishop that are strong not only in the local context but also in parts of northern Italy and in Piacenza they are able to develop forms of power at the borders of his diocese where bishop’s supervision is not so strict. |
