In the Collelongo site (central Italy), the exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and the beech forest was measured continuously for all years between 2000 and 2015. The simultaneous measurement of many parameters that influence the CO2 uptake makes possible to relate the CO2 exchange with some important climatic (e.g. temperature), environmental (e.g. (atmospheric CO2 concentration) and site (e.g. growing season length) variables. The net CO2 exchange (NEE) was measured by the eddy covariance method. Ecosystem respiration (Reco) and Gross Primary Production (GPP) calculated from Reco and NEE were obtained through standardised procedures from the European FLUXNET database. Over the years the beech forest acted as an important sink of carbon (average of 660 gC m−2 yr−1). During the observa2on period 2000-2015 NEE did not increased significantly, while it has been noticed a significant increase of Reco (21 gC m-2 yr-1) and a nonsignificant increase of GPP. The growing season length (leafed period) increased by 1.33 days a year. The analysis based on data collected in the period of maximum leaf area showed that photosynthesis and respiration are connected in their responses. At the latitudes of the Collelongo site, heat and water stress exert an effect on the overall ecosystem metabolism limiting both photosynthesis and respiration. At the site, heat coupled with water stress is the main stress factor, inducing a decrease in photosynthesis more than in respiration, and therefore in the overall CO2 uptake. Furthermore, the preliminary work done with the drone demonstrated the great potential of this tool in forest ecology, showing important relationships between vegetation indices obtained from the proximal sensing.it
