Abstract:

The renaissance of biblical studies, from the half of 11th century, represents the claim of the Church
to Reform's ideology: it elaborates a new edition of the Vulgata and promotes a glorious season for
the Bible, painted in church's walls and illustrated in illuminated manuscripts.
The research inspects iconographical biblical traditions, in Middle-Southern Italy, from the second
half of 11th century to the Sixties of 13th century, to reflect on the meaning of images, both in
illuminated manuscripts both in monumental pictures, on the respective figurative traditions and on
the possibility of interaction between workshops of monumental art and workshops active in book's
illumination.
