Scatti d'acciaio: le immagini della Società Terni tra narrazione e autocelebrazione, 1884-1920

Abstract

La tesi si incentra sull’utilizzazione che la Società Terni ha fatto delle sue fotografie, sia per monitorare i suoi processi produttivi che per presentarsi sul mercato. L’immagine della fabbrica, costruita su un impianto concettuale fornito dalla committenza, ha rappresentato sia un veicolo promozionale, sia l’ideologia d’impresa che si celava dietro la produzione fotografica. Con il lavoro di ricerca si è cercato far luce su come queste modalità di autorappresentazione siano state realizzate e si siano modificate nel tempo. E inoltre si sono analizzati i diversi circuiti di diffusione delle immagini scelti dai vertici aziendali per trasmettere i messaggi da esse veicolati, consapevoli delle potenzialità del linguaggio fotografico in termini di legittimazione pubblica e consenso.

This work is about the use of photography by Società Terni as an instrument to monitor internal production and as a medium to advertise itself into the market. Images of the factory had two precise purposes: advertising and, at the same time, a way to share the firm ideology. This research project describe how the Terni industry use photography for self representation and how the way of using it changes year after year. An other aspect has been the analysis of the use of the company images on different media chosen by the Terni’s management and how they were aware of the power of photography for social acceptance and approval.
