Viaggio nell'Europa di Damião de Góis

Abstract

La tesi di Dottorato in oggetto si prefigge di mettere in risalto in Italia la personalità di Damião de Góis, personaggio portoghese del Cinquecento trattato prevalentemente all’estero. La tesi è strutturata seguendo un percorso che traccia le fasi della vita di un uomo in perenne trasformazione, a tal punto da sviluppare una personalità poliedrica in cui arriveranno a convivere il il diplomatico, il commerciante, il pensatore, l’umanista, il religioso, il collezionista e lo scrittore. Damião de Góis nasce in un contesto storico complesso dominato da rivalità tra i vari regni europei, da masse di vagabondi e di diseredati, da guerre e dall’Inquisizione, mentre si va affermado il pensiero riformatore di Erasmo e Lutero. La conquista degli oceani da parte dei portoghesi, la trasformazione dell’idea associata al mar tenebroso, lo sviluppo di una nuova economia mondiale e l’introduzione di nuovi prodotti sui mercati europei, sono gli scenari con cui Damião de Góis si confronta. Affascinato dal diverso e dal mondo che si trova fuori dal regno portoghese, Damião de Góis inizia ad Anversa l’avventura della sua vita in qualità di rappresentante commerciale della corona lusitana, avviando un attività gestionale dell’amministrazione portoghese e viaggiando tra le principali capitali europee. Utilizzando le fonti dirette a stampa, le lettere inviate da Damião de Góis dalle varie città Europee e la documentazione inedita ritrovata all’Archivio nazionale della Torre do Tombo si è tentato di ricostruire fedelmente i percorsi tracciati e le difficoltà incontrate dal viaggiatore durante i suoi spostamenti, i personaggi da lui conosciuti e le vicissitudini legate ai commerci e alle guerre scoppiate durante quel periodo storico. Egli è un personaggio che trasferisce nel viaggio il suo stile di vita e l’attitudine alla diversità. Inoltre la coerenza tra il modus vivendi e operandi esaltano le sue qualità di ottimo commerciante e astuto diplomatico al fine di portare beneficio all’amata nazione portoghese. Con il recupero di una genealogia molto spesso trascurata è stato ricostruito il passato e il presente di un uomo innamorato della vita incline alla goliardia e alla procreazione di figli illegittimi. Utilizzando i testi scritti da Damião de Góis in qualità di cronista del regno portoghese, sono state tracciate le linee principali dei momenti legati all’espansione lusitana, dando una nuova luce allo studio di questi fatti. Le parole con cui il viaggiatore descrive la bellezza di Lisbona da lui esaltata insieme al regno lusitano, rivelano il carattere di un personaggio che ha conquistato un nuovo sguardo sul mondo. L’epilogo di una vita dove ormai vecchio viene condannato dall’Inquisizione per eresia, ci offre la possibilità di comprendere la difficoltà di un uomo nato libero in un Europa incatenata nei suoi dogmi e di mettere in luce chiaramente una delle principali ipotesi riguardo la sua morte.

The PhD thesis in object wants to highlight, in Italy, the personality of Damião de Góis, Portuguese character of the sixteenth century, mainly treated abroad. The thesis is structured following a path that traces the stages of the life of a man in continuous transformation, developing a versatile personality where the diplomat, the merchant, the thinker,the humanist, the religious, the collector and writer live together. Damião de Góis was born in a difficult historical context dominated by the rivalries between the various kingdoms of Europe, by masses of homeless and destitute, by wars and by the Inquisition, while the reforming thought of Erasmus and Luther was taking place. The conquest of the oceans by the Portuguese, the transformation of the idea associated to the sea of darkness, the development of a new world economy and the introduction of new products to European markets, are the scenarios in which Damião de Góis faces. Fascinated by the world outside the Portuguese kingdom, Damião de Góis begins, in Antwerp, the adventure of his life as a sales representative of the Lusitanian crown, starting a business management for the Portuguese authorities and traveling between the major European capitals. Using the direct printed sources, the letters sent by Damião de Góis from various European cities and unpublished documents found in the Torre do Tombo National Archives, I have attempted to reconstruct faithfully the trails and the difficulties encountered by the traveler during his travels, the characters he has known and the vicissitudes related to commerce and wars broken out during that period. He has a personality that transfers his lifestyle and attitude to diversity into travel. In addition, the consistency of the modus vivendi and operandi exalt his qualities of good businessman and astut diplomat in order to bring benefit to the beloved nation of Portugal. Thanks to the recovery of a very often overlooked genealogy I have reconstructed the past and present of a man in love with life, a student spirit inclined to the procreation of illegitimate children. Using the texts written by Damião de Góis as chronicler of the Portuguese kingdom, the main lines of the Lusitanian moments related to the expansion have been traced, giving a new light to the study of these facts. The words the traveler uses to describe the beauty of Lisbon, exalted together with the Lusitanian kingdom, reveal the nature of a character who has conquered a new vision of the world. The epilogue of a life, where as an old man he is convicted by the Inquisition for heresy, offers us the opportunity to understand the difficulty of a free born man in that Europe fettered in its dogmas and to highlight clearly one of the main hypotheses about his death.
