dc.description.abstract | Although biological invasions and eutrophication are being recognized as important elements of global change, very few studies have assessed how their synergism can affect structural and functional traits of marine ecosystems and no data are available on vulnerability of the coralligenous community, which is one of the most sensitive habitats of the Mediterranean Sea and an important hot spot of biodiversity. The present PhD thesis aimed to evaluate effects of seawater nutrient enrichment on both coralligenous macroalgal assemblages and spread of the introduced seaweed Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea, and the interactive effects of invasion and eutrophication on native macroalgal assemblages. Three manipulative field experiments were carried out at 24m depth in the north-western Mediterranean sea (Tuscany, Italy) by transplanting C. racemosa and supplying water column with nutrients. Results showed that structure of macroalgal assemblages was affected by nutrient enrichment, but severe negative effects mainly concerned the early successional stages of coralligenous. Eutrophication may facilitate the spread of C.racemosa by both enhancing its growth and eroding the natural resistance of assemblages, while impact of invasion on native community was a reduction of natural biodiversity and habitat complexity, which was amplified in the eutrophic areas. Results suggested that synergism between effects of different anthropogenic impacts can have severe consequences on the integrity of marine ecosystems; thus, maintenance of good water quality and natural habitat complexity, together with control of dispersion vectors, represent the only effective strategy to contain biological invasions in the Mediterranean sea. | it |
| it |
