Abstract
During the past decade the Bluefin Tuna has been exposed to rampant overfishing in the
Mediterranean Sea. Longliners, harpooners, and purse seiners all targeted this species, driven by the
high prices paid in Japan for sushi, which consumes 40% of global Bluefin Tuna. More recently,
these fleets have used ever-more sophisticated means to find the tuna, including spotter planes and
sonar equipment. The latest development, Tuna farming in the Mediterranean, is the final nail in the
coffin for this endangered species.
International enviromental associations are calling for a closure of the Mediterranean Bluefin Tuna
fishery, to gain control of the fishery and allow the species to recover and save it from collapse. It is
necessary to apply management measures that are closely based on scientific advice - for a healthy
fishery in the long term - and to reduce the bloated capacity of Mediterranean Tuna fleets
significantly.
The lack of control over Bluefin Tuna fishing and the ranching activity as well as the extent of
pirate fishing make it clear that stronger measures to control the fishing and ranching industries are
needed. These should include: a strict and independent observer scheme for tuna fishing vessels and
ranches; submission of accurate farming information to the International Commission for the
Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (the inter-governmental fishery organization responsible for the
conservation of tunas and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean and its adjacent sea); a new
minimum landing size that matches the sexual maturity of the species. The priority is a sensible
management plan that does not drive the species to extinction and the creation of marine reserves to
protect the Bluefin Tuna as well as the Mediterranean Sea.
