Abstract
The studies on global carbon flow use satellite data and regional information to create forecasting
models of primary production. The aim of this project was to study the effects of sea microscale
dynamics on photosynthetic activity through the use of the Pelagic Marine Mesocosm (PEMAM).
The PEMAM was built to study phytoplankton physiology and photo-acclimatation and was
realized in modules composed of a net, ballasted pipes and upper afloat boas to maintain a natural
regime of mixing and limit the "effect-of-wall" and biofouling formation. The samples were
collected every hour at 5 and 25 meter depths and analysed by the fluorimeter WATER PAM. The
PEMAM reduced horizontal flow speed (30%) maintained phytoplankton cells in the same
physical-chemical conditions for a long time, increasing their photo-acclimatization ability. This
behaviour was verified in the P/I curves which showed a photo-saturation state for a long time in
the inside collected samples, and in the photophysiological parameters which showed a temporal
shift of internal respect to external trends. In summer photosynthetic efficiency averages were
higher in depper water whereas in winter this avereges were higher at the surface. Pearson's
coefficient indicated that photosynthetic efficiency and ETR max correlated to photo-physiological
parameters were independent from dynamic conditions, whereas the light and temperature appeared
to be affected by dynamic conditions. Finally, we used data obtained in situ to observe the daily
variation of Primary production.
