Abstract
The Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.) stands of Tuscany are analyzed from a structural and dendro-auxometric point of view to express forest management and silviculture considerations. Information about cypress wood market is collected to evaluate the market problems. Regional production of this species is evaluated on the actual inventory.
Generally, in Italy, Cypress is used as a funeral and ornamental plant. Frequently this species characterize the rural landscape of Tuscany. In the first half of the twentieth-century, it has also been used for Italian reforestation for its pioneer quality. According to the INFC (Gasparini et Tabacchi, 2011), covered area of cypress stands in Tuscany is equal to 4,336 ha, making this region the one with the majority of Italian region. Tuscany is the most Italian region covered with cypress stands. Instead, according to the regional forestry inventory cypress stands are 4,960 ha. Furthermore, cypress stands are also found as accessory species. For INFC, number of cypress plants present in “cypress stands” category are only the 31%. The other 69% is in different categories.
In regional wood market, cypress timber is mainly used for fabrication of window frames. Cypress wood is particularly resistant to weathering, fungal and insect alterations for its oleoresin content.
Structural reliefs are tested with transects to underline particularly situations. The dynamics for the other mixing species are tested too. In cypress stands, where there are also holm oak plants, cypress regeneration is shaded compromising the vitality.
Angle count sampling and sampling plot are tested with dendro-auxometric query in five different situation for what concern age, spatial stand structural and mixture of species. Current annual increment of volume is evaluated with interpolation method, which doesn’t need reliefs of height growth that is particularly difficult to determine in cypress.
The marketing survey has been evaluated through interviews to the main cypress sawmills of Tuscany. Cypress trunk with more of 20 cm diameter is evaluated on average 15.60 €/102 kg.
The current annual increment of volume measured in sampling plots is equal to 3 m3 ha-1 y-1 that correspond to a regional cypress production of 13,950 m3 y-1. Cormometric volume percentage with adequate dimensions for the trunk market is 42%.
The work performance of sawmills is 70%. In the end, in cypress stands, the percentage of wood volume made in planks is 29.4%. This percentage decreases during the processing of the window frames due to work performance.
As a result of the analysis of the main silvicultural problems, the selection system is proposed.
