Abstract
Mixed forests are particularly interesting for forest structure and diversity analyses, as higher complexity and diversity can be expected in these forests. The thesis objectives are i) a review of existing precision forestry technologies to assess forest structure and diversity ii) a field campaign was conducted to test the application of precision forestry technologies in mixed forest structure and diversity analyses. Field inventory and proximal sensing tools (hemispherical photography, terrestrial laser scanning) were employed in three 1 ha mixed forest stands (Core Areas – CA) iii) the study used the dataset compiled to perform an integrated approach to evatulate stand structure, diversity and dynamics of mixed forests. Results indicate that species abundance varied according to different species composition and soil water availability. There was negative relationship between species richness of overstory and understory layers. Functional dispersion of drought tolerance trait found a positive relationship between overstory and understory layers. Non-spatial and functional richness analysis showed that CA3 has high structural diveristy and more disperse of species in trait space over time. The stand structural complexity measured using terrestrial laser scanning varied according to the different water avaialbilty and tree size differentiation. However, the integration of different approaches is meaningful to gain deeper understanding on forest structure and diversity.
