Abstract
The causal agent of Kiwifruit Bacterial Canker, Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), currently is the most damaging pathogen in the world capable of attacking the plants of Actinidia spp. Control strategies have been developed since its recent release (2008) in EU, but its incidence remains significant. To reduce the use of formulations with reduced environmental impact, during 2012 and 2013, was tested in the open field a natural antagonist (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum strain D747). In Kiwifruit orchards affected by Kiwifruit Bacterial Canker in the provinces of Viterbo and Latina (Lazio Region, Italy) different potential biocontrol agents (BCAs) of Psa were isolated from leaves. B. a. subsp. plantarum was effective in the control of Psa and, from an initial group of potential BCAs of Psa (60), the more active ones (6) were selected. These were studied in details as biocontrol agents of Psa strains isolated in Italy and in all the most important Kiwifruit areas of the world affected by Kiwifruit Bacterial Canker. The selected BCAs proved to be able to inhibit the growth of Psa, to survive and to epiphytically colonize the Kiwifruit organs, to produce biofilms and biosurfactants, and to compete with Psa for nutrients (Biolog System).
