Abstract
In Frances Burney's novel Evelina goes twice to London and there she develops. In this process the town has a fundamental role. The link between the growth of the girl and the city clearly appears in the descriptions of the places she visits. At the beginning of her journey she describes London as a wonderful and sparkling city because she had never been to so big a place before. She is a country girl who suddenly gets to a big city and she looks at everything with surprise. Then she discovers that behind a charming façade there is a completely different world.
London is a fundamental part of the novel: not only is it the backdrop of the adventures of Evelina, but also it seems to be a character in its own right. London becomes the co-star in Evelina.
Analysing the places and the fashonable events described by Frances Burney in her novel I have reconstructed some aspects of Georgian London. The center of my study is not the character of Evelina as such but the town of London which is the setting of the novel, and which plays out an important role in the protagonist's growth. It is like a microcosm with certain rules and a personality of many hues.
