Abstract
The decline of the organic carbon content in soils of the Mediterranean area is of great concern, not only for the loss of fertility of agricultural land, including the risks of increased erosion and desertification. Study the relationship between land use and organic carbon content present is of great importance in the identification of best agronomic practices for sequestration of C in the soil. This is even more important in relation to the proposed regulations that are emerging and which consider the maintenance of organic matter for the application of cross-compliance, the greening and the agri-environmental measures in the 2014-2020 programming period. Soil quality is the basis of fertility and sustainable agricultural development. The concept of sustainability is very complex and often the construction of indicators can be instrumental in achieving the objective. The carbon stock indicator is one of the main environmental indicators that can provide information on sustainable land management. The objective of the thesis is to identify in production systems, the most efficient conservative techniques in terms of the C storage in the soil and, therefore, the increase in the content of organic matter. The balance of C will be studied in terms of the dynamic processes that control the cycle (reserves, mineralization, humification, etc.), by means of laboratory determinations, with the use of mathematical simulation models (Roth C), and mapping (GIS), to compare the measured data on carbon stocks, in different years, thus being able to show the dynamics and scenarios over time, to certify the changes in carbon stocks of a particular unit monitoring. The activities have been conducted at the research laboratories of the CREA-RPS in Rome, and refer to previous and on going research project on the issue of soil carbon.
