Abstract
The yards of pruning of urban trees represent a huge resource of wood biomass, left often in order to be collected in green dumps, or used however in way not appropriated.
Aim of this study is to analyze the work systems in this kind of yards and to obtain reliable data about the productivity and the amount of cut biomass.
Pruning represents the slow phase of the observed work, in fact it was necessary to cut part of great branches before starting to prune. Another critical factor is represented from the phase of harvesting of the thin branches, that heavily conditions work times . The integral collection of the wood residues would need a radical reorganization of the yards, whose productivity is limited from particular factors, such as the lack of spaces for the preparation of the yard, the presence of buildings and other constructions
These problems concerns trees located in urban areas, but not that ones located along the roads in the countryside, where it’s possible to apply the same work systems as in forest yards
The companies are generally obliged from the contract to accumulate the residues in areas, often directly adjacent to the roads, where it’s easy to organize a yard in order to chip the residues with specific machinery.
The analysis of the yards object of the study has evidenced, that the residual material represents generically from 15 to 35% of the cut mass, in terms of fresh weight. It is difficult to quantify the residual material for the inquired area (Municipality of Rome), for there is not a complete and detailed study on the existing trees in the communal area, their positioning and the parameters. Such census, would be an useful instrument not only for the planning of the yards of pruning, but also for the correct management of the residues, in order to use them for the production of local energy.
It was possible however to make an evaluation of the amount of residues produced by the company examined in Rome, that is one of the most important in the area. It collects 80 mst of thin branches/day, which annualy are 17,600 mst. equal to approximately 7.000 t of fresh substance.
