Abstract
The history of Romance philology in post-unification Italy is linked to the
history of the university’s foundation, conceived as a pivotal institution for
the construction of the scientific and spiritual culture of the new state. Ernesto
Monaci had an active role in that reform process, based on the constant
dialogue and confrontation he entertained with the rest of Europe, an
approach meant to develop the modern structures of a free and constitutional
state.
