Abstract
The chapter proposes a critical analysis of educational discourses and practices related to gender emancipation and the education of the younger generation. Through the centuries, it highlights how male chauvinist principles and a distorted view of sexuality, influenced by theology and morality, dominated women's education. The need for a profound change in the way these issues are dealt with is emphasised through conscious education that promotes mutual respect and human emancipation. Current projects, aimed at fighting gender-based violence and hatred, are also discussed by underlining the importance of a transversal and inclusive educational
approach that actively involves families, communities and institutions. Finally, the debate is raised on the need for greater autonomy of schools in addressing these issues, instead of adopting projects imposed from above, in order to foster a real cultural transformation towards gender equality and respect for human relations
