Abstract
The case study of the Virgin Carmen is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary work which includes the study of the artefact, of its conservative and production history and of the origin of Marian devotion in the sailors. The analysis of this artefact, a little 20th century panel, allows appreciating the strength of the faith of sea sailings, as well as the importance of an altar on a ship. The peculiarity of the artefact is also in allowing for establishing the value of the Spanish craftsmanship in the mid-twentieth century. All this has been made possible by the use of artistic diagnostics which enabled to reconstruct the history of devotion through non-invasive and micro-investigations
