Abstract
Proteomics is a powerful tool to identify relevant proteins in biological tissues and fluids. Identification of proteins associated with various aspects of milk and meat production can provide a baseline for new researches relative to the biology of lactation and of muscular tissue. This PhD thesis is aimed to investigate through proteomic methods protein expression in livestock products, by comparing breeds selected for different purposes. A complete description of the method used (2D-IEF-SDS PAGE) has been reported, comprehensive of detailed descriptions and observation about chemical and technical aspects.
Three studies were performed: a proteomic and transcriptomic comparison of liver tissue of Chianina and Friesian cattle breeds; a proteomic and transcriptomic comparison of muscle tissue of Large White and Casertana pig breeds; and a proteomic comparison of the proteins of the milk MFGM fraction of Chianina and Friesian cattle breeds. Data have been analyzed through informatic methods putting emphasis on the genetic traits, physiology, and implications of the effects of selection.
