Abstract
In vivo genotoxicity tests are key components in the hazard characterization of genotoxic compounds because they are used both to determine if the potential genotoxicity observed in vitro is confirmed in vivo and to detect any genotoxic carcinogen that are poorly detected in vitro. More specifically, the in vivo cytogenetic assays (e.g., mammalian micronucleus and chromosomal aberration assays) are fundamental in the identification of genotoxic compounds because the majority of chemical and physical mutagenic agents mainly induce chromosome mutations. A detailed overview of the key features of these assays and a description of the most recent and innovative technologies introduced in the experimental procedures are given. This chapter also provides recommendations for setting appropriate experimental procedures to obtain valid studies as well as criteria for the evaluation and interpretation of the results obtained, to make a consistent conclusion.
