Abstract
Defining what is meant by ‘experimental’ in the realm of cinema has always been a nuanced and multifaceted endeavour. The term has blurred boundaries and tends to become the catch-all label for all forms of moving images that resist easy classification, questioning the monolithic nature of narrative cinema. Experimental forms often defy the conventions of traditional distribution channels, proudly assert their authors’ creative independence in production and embrace non-professional formats. This anthology, aimed for students, researchers and academics, represents the first collection in the English language to explore the domain of experimental and independent Italian film, which is intricately intertwined with the aesthetic development of the nation.
