Abstract
The nursery production in our country is affected by new socio-economic changes on a global and local scale, with important consequences in technological and economic sectors. The replacement of peat with the compost in the preparation of substrates of cultivation in the nursery sector as well as the reduction of production costs, take a strong impact on the environment both in terms of saving non-renewable natural resources and production to lower emissions of greenhouse gases. The present study was aimed to test the compost resulting from pruning residues produced on a nursery, as a possible replacement (total or partial) of peat, in the cultivation of lavender and olive trees. The compost product was analyzed both from a microbiological point of view (monitoring and identification of the fungal species with antagonistic activity against species of telluric pathogens) that chemical (study of nitrogen mineralization). The response of the species grown on different substrates having as variable the content of compost used in replacement of peat (25%, 50%, 100%), taking into account different growth parameters, has been analyzed. The experiments carried out showed that significant results have shown as the partial replacement of peat with compost could improve the antagonistic activity of potting-mix and can be considered a viable alternative for growing potted plants, with consequent benefits both in terms of environmental protection than on purely economic.
