Abstract
Infectious Bursal disease virus (IBDV) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) are the cause of economically important diseases of poultry in Mediterranean countries. Vaccines are regarded as the most beneficial interventions to prevent this kind of infections. The aim of the project was to use plants as “biofactories” for the transient and stable (hairy roots) expression of newly designed vaccine candidates based on IBDV and NDV antigens (VP2 and F protein, respectively) fused to the fragment crystallizable region of chicken IgY immunoglobulins (both IBDV and NDV). In the case of the NDV antigen, two further approaches were explored, one based on the fusion of NDV antigen to the coat protein of the plant virus Potato virus X and one based on Heat Shock Protein 70 purified from plant leaves transiently expressing the F protein. After expression, protocols have been set-up to optimize antigen purification and the purified antigens tested in preliminary immunization assays in chicken.
