Abstract
Land use and land cover changes (LUCC) are among the most important alterations of the
Earth’s land surface. Since the Second World War, LUCC and landscape transformations have
accelerated. Thus, understanding and predicting the causes, processes and consequences of
LUCC has become a major challenge to landscape ecology, regional land use planning and
biodiversity conservation. A serious analysis of these changes in central Italy has not yet been
realised. In particular, for the time period before launch of Landsat satellite (1972), the study of
changes was pointed out for small areas only. Consequently, the dynamics of large territories are
not clear.
The studies presented in this dissertation intend to contribute to the growth of the level of
knowledge and awareness of these dynamics. The analysis conducted in the period 1950-2000 on
Rieti Province (central Italian Apennines), in fact, made it possible to observe the changes in the
landscape and to highlight the discrepancies between the data commonly used for the analysis of
LUCC. Moreover, the main causes and consequences of abandonment and natural forestation
were analysed and some predictions of future scenarios were developed.
The methodologies here presented and the results obtained, give a useful contribution to
interregional development plans, aiming to reduce the risk of loss of natural resources (e.g.
biodiversity conservation) and at preserving both the traditional landscape and the cultural
heritage of the population.
