Abstract
The present paper considers the important role of stratigraphic analysis on medieval houses in Viterbo in improving the knowledge of minor architecture and of its types, highlighting in certain cases the contribution of the workers coming from large religious and secular worksites of the time, the development of new building methods and the adoption of new architectural elements. This study proposes two new building types: one characterized by the distribution on two or three levels and the presence of wooden balconies with external niches and rounded or segmental arches; the other by a great elevation (at least three storeys) and the presence of stringcourses. From the analysis of building techniques a particularly interesting element emerges: the presence in the city ante 13th century of stone buildings of a certain volume and the confirmation, at least in the area studied, of a continuous use in time of both the urban setting and the road network.
