Abstract
The multidisciplinary approach used in the Tuscia Romana study makes use of multicriteria analysis (MCA). The objective is to provide a valid model to estimate the availability of agro-forestry biomass for energy use, based on a local scale analysis, in an environmental context characterized mainly by the use of agricultural and forestry lands. This paper underlines the lack of suitable tools for decision-making and broader planning. In addition, the presence of important natural sites, which are very common in Europe, increases the importance of making proper use of territory within energy planning, while protecting the natural area, according to the European legislative environment. Regarding the Costa Rica’s study, the objective was to analyze the potential energy of the main agricultural and forestry products in Costa Rica. In a context of lack of biomass energy sector development, our contribution goes beyond the characterization of biomass types and quantifying them, studying the fragmented databases made available so that we can evaluate the potential and provide a valid policy tool to start addressing the political instruments also towards this branch of potential energy, which is currently left in background.
