Abstract
In this work the biomass obtained from hazelnuts pruning in the province of Viterbo was
investigated. At present, the pruning’s residues are destroyed by farmers directly in the
field, at the end of the pruning; in this way, every year, a large quantity of biomass,
represented by hazelnut’s pruning, is lost; the residues obtained from the hazelnut’s
pruning, are an important source of biomass that could be used for thermal energy
production. However, there is a sensible difference between young and old plants
production, so the aim of this work is to appraise the amount of biomass available from
hazelnut pruning, considering the age of plants and the number of plants per hectare. To
evaluate the amount of pruning a grid model was utilized. In laboratory humidity of
biomass, low calorific value, ash and the content of carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and nitrogen
(N) were determined. The results show that the amount of biomass obtained from
pruning of hazelnuts is 3,5 kg/plant while the average value of production per hectare is
1.388 kg, with an humidity content of about 46,69%. The pruning calorific value obtained
is equal to 18,39 MJ/kg. In order to equal the energy produced by 1 kg of diesel oil are
needed 2.32 kg of pruning. The use of pruning as an energy biomass resource is a real
opportunity to properly manage agricultural waste and create jobs.
