Abstract
The research investigates the concept of the Middle Ages as seen in the city of Viterbo.
It studies then the modalities through which Viterbo has experienced a specificity of “neomedievalismo”, out of the generic fashions in the nineteenth century, to find reasons and deep roots that, in a long process, are transmitted from the past to nowadays.
The work is divided into two parts: the first one, The Middle Ages, analyses and explains the processes of formation, development, characterisation and reading of the medieval Viterbo and its languages, with particular attention to the "question of origins" and the Gothic penetration in the city, presenting some cases study in painting and architecture. In the second part, Memories of the Middle Ages, verifies how time these elements have been incorporated, rediscovered, altered, restored or forgotten, through the centuries starting from the moment of rebirth of the “Risorgimento”, with the formation of the collections of the Museo Civico, the management of heritage monuments and the regulation of the urban environment. The crossing of the different seasons of rediscovery of “medioevalismo”, the review of episodes and restoration sites already known or discovering other less known allow to arrive at the fascist age, unique moment in the history of the city that has decisively changed the medieval face, transforming structures, routes and images.
These studies show considerable diversities: the reading made on the Middle Ages and its return to Viterbo generates a more complex horizon if compared to initial expectations or previous reviews, reserving a particular important role to the "erudition" of the municipal life between late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The work is accompanied by a large documentary appendix and has a selected repertoire of vintage images, considered as document of the various stages of preservation of the city and related monuments trough the times.
