Abstract
Recent research carried on into Carolingian Italy tend to conclude that royal power was fairly successful in running public administration and ensuring military defence of the Lombard Kingdom, after its conquest by the Franks. From a monetary point of view, the reforms introduced by Charles the Great to bring Italy progressively into the Frankish system were equally successful. This success has been furthe emphasized by new analyses on the intrinsic value of the Italian issues.The situation appears different when we focus on the mints. Their very limited number is an anomaly which we are attempting to understand
