Abstract
Historical-oriented ELT (English Language Teaching) research is still at its infancy even though it could well explain why the preference for English as a foreign language of study in Europe is a relatively recent phenomenon. It may also shed light on the reasons why Italian students lag behind the language proficiency of their European mates. this paper will try to contribute to the research on English language education by outlining the evolution of the Italian higher education system and reforms conceming the teaching of the foreign language. when necessary, references to primary and secondary education will be made.
