Abstract
Il presente elaborato verte sull’analisi e la valorizzazione delle terme pubbliche collocate nel settore sud-orientale dell’area archeologica dell’antica città di Volsinii. Il complesso, infatti, viene escluso quasi totalmente dalle precedenti attività di ricerca e scavo condotte per circa un quarantennio dall’ École Française de Rome, risultando quasi completamente inedito. Per lo studio di quest’ultimo indispensabile è stata la comprensione dei complessi termali da un punto di vista strutturale, funzionale e amministrativo, e di come questi, con forme e modi differenti, si inserivano in tutto il bacino del mediterraneo, diventando una delle strutture più significative e meglio attestate del mondo romano. Successivamente, viste le differenti tipologie riscontrate, la ricerca si è concentrata sui complessi termali ricadenti nell’area geografica pertinente al nostro caso. Lo studio condotto sui complessi termali pubblici urbani della Regio VII Etruria è risultato, infatti, importante per identificare e chiarire le motivazioni che hanno portato alla costruzione di questa tipologia di edificio in determinati settori dei centri urbani ed evidenziare alcuni tratti comuni nelle diverse città della Regio VII Etruria. Successivamente, l’analisi si è concentrata sullo studio del complesso termale della città di Volsinii sia tramite l’analisi delle tecniche costruttive visibili, sia attraverso attività di scavo in alcuni settori del complesso, con lo scopo di aumentare la conoscenza da un punto di vista cronologico, planimetrico e urbanistico.
This work deals with the analysis and valorization of the public baths located in the south-eastern sector of the archaeological area of the ancient city of Volsinii. The complex, in fact, has been almost totally excluded from the previous research and excavation activities conducted for about forty years by the École Française de Rome, resulting almost completely unpublished. For this work it was essential an understanding of the thermal complexes from a structural, functional and administrative point of view, and how these ones, with different forms and methods, were inserted throughout the Mediterranean basin, becoming one of the most significant and best attested structures of the Roman world. Then, after finding different typologies, the research focused on the thermal complexes in the geographical area relevant to our case. The study conducted on the urban public thermal complexes of Regio VII Etruria has, in fact, been important for identifying and clarifying the reasons that led to the construction of this type of building in a few sectors of the urban centers and highlighting some common traits in the different cities of Regio VII Etruria. Finally, the analysis focused on the study of the thermal complex of the city of Volsinii both through the analysis of the visible construction techniques and through excavation activities in some sectors of the complex, for increasing knowledge from a chronological, planimetric and urban planning point of view.
