Abstract
Scientific tools are commonly very expensive and often it is very difficult to plan a research based on a large number of sensors. In order to obtain a low cost experimental tools to investigate growth, health and phenological development of plants, low cost sensor disposal in the international market was investigated. Open source software and hardware were found to be very interesting to the aim. Low cost sensors functionality test and microcontroller programming test were conducted and showed that it is possible to plan a reliable and accurate low cost sensor network to investigate agroecological and environmental dynamics.
A sperimental trial were conducted to test optical CMOS low cost sensor compared to a professional camera designed for remote sensing investigation on plant and cultivation growth; positive results were obtained in a lattuce plant nursery orchard.
A sperimental trial was also started using three different soil moisture sensors and first results seems to be very interesting.
Low cost allows to increase the number of sensor network could be a very useful tool to improve knowledge of ecological parameters and to improve growth mathematic model of plants and pests. A properly designed low cost network could be also very useful in conventional farm managing.
