Abstract
Every year, a large amount of agricultural, agro-industrial, urban and forestry residues are treated as waste, but they could be recovered and used to produce energy. Among the main types of agro-industrial waste, coffee residues account for a significant amount worldwide. Because of their composition, they can be used in biodiesel production, as a source of sugar, or as a sorbent for metal removal. Orchards also generate a lot of pruning waste each year. Currently, prunings of hazelnut and olive trees in the best of cases, are chopped and left on the ground however; they are often burned in the field and this involves the generation of CO2 emissions and wasting a resource that could have been exploited differently.
The purpose of this thesis was to assess the employability of coffee grounds by looking at their energetical features and also to improve the characteristics of pruning residues of hazelnut and olive groves. The research activity has moved through chemical and physical characterizations, pelletizing tests to obtain a commercially viable product, combustion tests to analyse atmospheric emissions, evaluation of the life cycle of supply chains for the recovery and pelletizing of coffee grounds by considering different alternative waste-to-energy scenarios, comparison and modelling with traditional biomass for the development of a predictive model of the higher heating value and evaluation of the impact of mechanical pre-treatment on the quality of pruning residues of hazelnut and olive trees on anaerobic biodegradability.
The results show that spent coffee grounds are excellent as biomass, with excellent values in terms of heating power and low ash content, the production of 98% coffee pellets suggests that they are highly suitable for use in thermal conversion systems. The major environmental impact is given by the pelletizing process with the exception of ozone formation and terrestrial ecotoxicity, which are mainly influenced by the transport process in the stage of coffee grounds collection. The environmental benefits of spent coffee ground pelletizing are the mitigation of climate change, and reduction of freshwater eutrophication. Among the waste-to-energy scenarios, biodiesel is the worst; on the other hand, pellet production and bio-oil demonstrate the most favourable environmental profiles. Through composition and energy analysis of coffee grounds, it was possible to fix linear models that can link elemental composition to biomass energy yield. Spent coffee grounds showed a higher HHV than any other woody and herbaceous plant, manifesting great potential from the perspective of energy.
In the mechanical process, the coarser products that were obtained from the pruning residues, were characterised by a high reduction in ash and nitrogen content. The best products from the processing were subjected to anaerobic digestion. The finest product from hazelnut processing achieved a 70.1% higher methane yield than the untreated substrate, while their analogues from the olive pruning processing, achieved a methane yield of approximately +93.5% compared to the untreated feedstock.
In conclusion, the results indicate that is an excellent candidate for use in energy conversion systems; furthermore, the mechanical process that was studied, could be successfully used to improve the quality of olive and hazelnut prunings and establish new markets.
