Abstract
Agriculture and forestry can strongly contribute to achieve the energetic independence for European Union. Among the possible solutions offered by the two sectors toward the supply of bioenergy, dedicated crops could play a major role. However, the mechanical harvesting of dedicated energy crops still represents a challenge for different species. In this PhD course I focused on the assessment of the mechanical harvesting issues related to different oilseeds, perennial grasses and Medium Rotation Coppice (MRC) plantations, this last with particular reference to the Mediterranean forestry context. The obtained findings showed that perennial grasses like giant reed, miscanthus, switchgrass and reed canary grass can be harvested without particular problems by using harvesting systems typical of haymaking. Similar conclusions can be drawn for the oilseed crop camelina, that can be harvested by a combine harvester equipped with a cereal header with limited adjustments to the combine cleaning shoe settings. The mechanical solution for castor bean is instead still far, considering that both sunflower and cereal headers did not show satisfactory performance in terms of seed loss and correct processing of the capsules by the cleaning shoe. The development of dedicated headers or a double passage harvesting can be listed among the possible solutions to be implemented. Finally, focusing on MRC poplar plants in the Mediterranean context, the evaluated small scale prototype revealed very satisfactory working performance, although it can be applied only in the case the chipping operation can be performed on the field and there is no the need to ship the stems to a proper landing site.
