Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms of sediment distribution and concentrations of potentially harmful elements, both natural that anthropogenic origin, is the basis for the study of the effects on the biological component. This is especially true in coastal environments because they "constitute the front line invested by terrigenous pollutants of both natural and and artificial origin" (Brondi A., 1979). The ability of pelites to record the variations of sediment distribution and concentration of pollutants over time, can be used to compare different variables (grain size, textural relationships, mass accumulation rates and trace elements concentrations) in order to identify possible influences due to human activities. The recognition of the anthropogenic influence from the natural one is, from an ecological perspective, a key aim for assessing the status of the present ecological communities. This is the context of this work, that, integrating bibliographic and experimental data (sedimentological, geochemical and radiochronological ones) in the coastal platform of northern Lazio, analyzes the areal and temporal dispersion of marine sediments and of the associated elements and proposes a methodology for the total sedimentary flows assessment from which the partial flows of the considered trace elements can be calculated.
