Abstract
This work has the purpose to analyze some physical and energetic parameters of woodchip from
woody material of different types of tree species for the biomass production used in the different
technological processes for energy conversion.
The characteristics examinated are: component breakdown, particlesize distribution, bulk density,
high heating value, ash content and content on Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) Hydrogen (H). Those
parameters influence the energetic quality and the economical convenience of the woody biomass.
The research was extended to several species, different cultivation systems and dedicated
plantations for woody biomass production, they are an excellent source of low-cost material.
The energetic characterization has been realized for biomass from Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) of
different poplar clones, from whole plants and residual biomass from forest utilization and pruning
residues.
The poplar clones (Populus spp.) from Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) analyzed are AF2, AF6,
Monviso, Limavady and Muur. Whole plants from first thinning operations are Pinus nigra
Arnold., Pinus halepensis Miller, Picea abies and Pinus pinaster Miller L, the forest utilization
material from Quercus spp. and Fagus sylvatica and the residual biomass from orange pruning
residues.
After having realized those analisys, it’s possible to say that wood chips size has a fundamental role
for the product's shelf and for the subsequent conversion efficiency.
