Abstract
The present thesis has tried to define the structure and regeneration processes of some preserved Taxus baccata L populations in Central Italy. For the first time a census data has carried out.
Surveys have pointed out that the populations of Taxus baccata L. are distributed in deciduous
forests, among which beech stands are the most diffused. In analogy with other European stands
yew is associated with lime, maples and the common ash, and with other species.
The beech forests are unevenaged high forest (volume 320-630 m3/ha). At Pettorano the beech
stand is a coppice (volume 160-180 m3/ha) that as passed the traditional rotation.
The analyses have revealed the altitudinal range of yew distribution in the Central Appennines
(900-1700 m. a.s.l). The yew ecological optimum is described through basal area and tree
distribution along altitudinal, slope and aspect gradients. In the ecological optimum, that is sitespecific, the maximum basal area correspond to the maximum tree-height and regeneration process.
Geostatical analyses have reveled that yew population are clustered. Overall, an 80-180 m radius could be used to define minimum patch size for conservation purposes. Regeneration was also spatially autocorrelated, with patterns very similar between sites. Regeneration is autocorrelated up to an inter-plot distance (26-135 m). The cross-variogram between regeneration and basal area also showed spatial autocorrelation, but of inverse type. At Pettorano the cross variogram is positive,
and shows a much stronger spatial dependence up to a distance of 280 m.
On the basis of this ecological research some considerations on stand management are carried out with special attention to the problem of yew conservation and to restoration of old-growth forest (yew planting, silvicultural treatments in beech stands).
