Abstract
Thise dissertation concerns the structural and ecological characterization of Fonte Novello and
Aschiero old-growth beech forests, located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National
Park, in the Abruzzo region (Central Italy). In such areas, the main forest structural attributes
features were examined and the a sampling of the three important taxonomic groups (vascular
plants, beetles coleoptera and epiphytic lichens) was carried out. Through the data analysis
appropriated indexes (β-diversity, richness and species composition of the species) were calculated
in order to compare the investigated forests. Further statistical analysis was carried out to evaluate
the correlation between variables related to stand attributes specific features and the presence of
taxa or groups. This study gives a contribution to the issue knowledge of old-growth forests in the
Apennine and provides some scientific, technical and management indications for the conservation
of threatened species.
