Abstract
Biomass is one of the most common and easily available Renewable Energy Sources and can be used to produce energy in different way. Therefore their use is fundamental in order to reduce the Global Warming problem and the reliance on fossil fuels. Especially great advantages can be achieved using residual and waste biomass in small-size energy plants. Indeed the use of residual biomass can lead to several advantages because in this way the amount of disposed wastes decreases and, as a consequence, the environmental impact of waste disposal is reduced. The choice of the energy conversion process depends on the fuel properties of the biomass. Therefore, in this work, the following energy characteristics have been studied, according to the European Standards, in order to assess the best conversion technology for the analyzed biomass: moisture content, ash content, calorific value, total content of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. Moreover, for the case of Solid Olive Mill Waste, some tests have been carried out in a micro pilot-scale anaerobic digester, useful in order to study the Bio-Methane Potential (BMP) and to evaluate the possibility to use solid olive mill waste, with and without pits, in anaerobic digestion and co-digestion processes.
