Abstract
This paper describes the Portuguese-Dutch manuscript shelf- marked Cod. Orient. 283 from the Staats- und Universitäts- bibliothek Hamburg. The first part analyses its paratexts, provides information about the authorship of the manuscript, the collection to which it belonged, and its connection with other similar texts tracing the history of its transmission. The second part, comparing it with other similar texts, comments on the descriptive categories used for describing Tamil. It also discusses some of its linguistic peculiarities whose analysis allows shedding light on the language to which the missionary was exposed.
