Abstract
In the paintings found in the church of the monastery of Axt ‘ala (northern Armenia), executed between 1205-1216 under the rule of the kingdom of Georgia, Benedict of Nursia is painted in the south transept among the stylite saints, and is also shown half bust on a column. The old profoundly sunken face does not conform to the iconography of the saint developed in the West and has no precedents, not even in Byzantine where Benedict was never represented despite being well known. The original image of the saint of Axt ‘ala is investigated in light of the relationship between the Benedictines, the Georgian Church and the open cultures of the Armenian-Chalcedonian church.
