Abstract
The characterization of the main polymer components of wood and cork, such as lignin, suberin, cellulose and hemicellulose, has been for many years an important subject of research. A large amount of methods used to study the structural components of wood are based on classical chemical processes generally time expensive and laborious, that often are followed by chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis. On the contrary, the analysis based on thermal decomposition can be applied directly on the wood tissue making it faster because it does not require extraction and purification. They also allowed easily to on-line combination with, chromatographic and spectroscopic systems, resulting in technical equipments able to simultaneously monitoring the products of decomposition of the pyrolysed material. The present work describes two instrumental techniques, the Py-GC/MS and TPPy-GC/MS, consisting of the combination of a temperature programmable pyrolyzer(TPPy) and a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry system(GC / MS). The conventional system Py-GC/MS is simply build-up matching the pyrolyzer and column by the gas chromatograph injector. In the TPPy-GC/MS analytical system, differently the on-line coupling is achieved with the help of two 6 port sampling valves allowing the sampling of the gas developed by the thermal decomposition of the sample. Through the two systems described above were analyzed samples of wood from different species collected from plants affected by fungal infection (white rot), commercial wood and it was also analyzed the bark of 26 tree species. The purposes of the survey were: 1. to highlight different behavior of wood samples from the same plant but with different levels of fungal infection when subjected to thermal degradation; 2. to characterize different wood species; 3. to characterize different types of bark to determine the possible formation of cork. The data obtained from thermal analysis allowed to found appreciable simple correlations between parameters and characteristics of the tissue analyzed. Furthermore, were statistical analysis carried. Multivariate analysis of main components (PCA) and cluster analysis confirmed and clarified the relationship between the chemical composition of structural components and morphological characteristics of wood and cork.
