Abstract
In Italy, the cultivation area of garlic is continually decreasing. In fact has been reduced from 3.879
ha in 2001 to 3.141 ha in 2007, Hence the production has suffered in the same period a significant
reduction about 5772 t. Imports however, is attested constantly around 25-30.000 tons for year. In
additional of those conditions, the quantity produced in Italy has only 50% of the market demand.
Base on the above condition, in last three years (2006-2008) in the Faculty of Agricultural,
University of Tuscia, Viterbo, has been conducted some experiments, to achieve the following
objectives:
- characterize the agronomic point of view, morphological and molecular of two cultivars of
national garlic Rosso di Sulmona ' and Bianco piacentino ', and two ecotypes of Lazio Rosso
di Castelliri’ and ‘Rosso di Proceno’;
- determine the total nutrient transportation of N, P2O5, K2O, CaO, MgO and the relative
rates of absorption;
- determine the optimal planting time;
- identify the best crop density;
- studying the reproductive biology of the garlic.
The experiment showed interesting results and information regarding the potential production
expressed by the type of genotypes in the climatic conditions of Lazio, the optimum planting time,
the best crop density, and the nutritional requirements of the crop to develop a plant for proper
fertilization. Moreover we were also obtained a very important result on the sexual reproduction of
garlic.
The work which we done at the Department of Plant Pathology, University of California, Riverside
(USA) has identified the presence of viruses in garlic, using ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immuno
Sorbent Assay) and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). The results showed that garlic is heavily
infected with Potyvirus and Carlavirus virus, in which the recovery of virus together with the
implementation of an appropriate technical route, is an important step for obtaining a marketable
product quality which necessary for the revival of the crop in Lazio.
